ALUMNI NEWS

We hope you will join us as we honor the 2026 TMI Hall of Fame Honorees and Outstanding Young Alumni. This year, the TMI Hall of Fame ceremony will take place during Alumni Weekend on Friday, October 30, 2026 from 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm in All Saint’s Chapel at TMI. This is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with old friends and celebrate the accomplishments of our alumni community. It is also a special time to celebrate milestone class anniversaries: 10 year (Class of 2016), 25 year (Class of 2001), 50 year (Class of 1976) and 75 year (Class of 1951).
The TMI Hall of Fame honors those whose exceptional contributions to TMI, whether as alumni, faculty, staff, or friends, have exemplified one or more of our core values: Wisdom, Integrity, Service, Excellence, and Reverence. The Outstanding Young Alumni award recognizes individuals under 40 who have made significant professional achievements or outstanding contributions to their communities.
We are honored to announce that this year’s Hall of Fame Honorees are Gardner Peavey ’93, Allan Rupe ’80, Robert “Bob” Boerner ’73 and Scott Petty ’55. Receiving the Distinguished Servant Leadership award are Rev. Cliff Waller and Cynthia “Gramzie” Zielinski. Alumni receiving the Outstanding Young Alumni Award are Trent Melcher ’07 and Alexis Elliott-Stabler ’06. We will also have a special “Golden Panther” ceremony for alumni from the Class of 1976 in honor of their 50th anniversary.
The 2026 Hall of Fame ceremony promises to be a historic occasion as we celebrate TMI’s mission and reminisce about the memories that have shaped our community. We hope you’ll join us to be a part of this memorable day!

On Saturday, April 18, 2026, the TMI community gathered for the Stars Over TMI Gala & Auction, marking 31 years of community, connection, and impact. The evening generated just over $1.2M in support of TMI students and will significantly impact their experience now and for years to come.
$779,775 of the total raised that evening will directly support the “Field Worthy of a Panther” Fund-a-Need project that will transform our upper field with modern field turf, D-Zone completion, and supporting infrastructure. Making significant progress towards our $2M goal, TMI hopes to fundraise the remaining goal amount by June 15 in order to start the project this upcoming 2026-27 school year. If you’d like to make a gift or inquire about this project, please contact our advancement office at t.phelps@tmi-sa.org or visit the website here.
The remaining total of just over $400,000 will support the TMI Fund, which directly impacts faculty excellence, student opportunities, facility and technology enhancements, facility improvements, and the school’s greatest needs. The night was a true celebration of what can be accomplished when our community comes together in support of our school.
We are deeply grateful for the enthusiasm and generosity that made the evening such a success. An additional email will be shared soon and include the full photo gallery and a video highlight of this remarkable night. See you next year!

Question: Can you tell us about your current work at Rice (e.g., research)?
I am currently a junior at Rice, majoring in Bioengineering with a specialization in Tissue Engineering Research and Design. I recently started working in the Mikos Laboratory at the Bioscience Research Collaborative in Houston under the guidance of Dr. Antonios Mikos in January and am committed to working over the summer and the following year.
I am working on two different projects in the lab. The first project goal is to develop tissue-mimicking biomaterials derived from bone extracellular matrices to treat patients with critical bone defects, which are severe injuries to major bones that cannot heal on their own. The second project is developing 3D bioprinted tissue scaffolds that mimic the kidney environment for patients suffering from kidney disease. My previous research during my time at Rice has also focused on investigating the effects of hyperglycemia on breast cancer in diabetic triple-negative breast cancer patients. I presented this work at the Natural Science Symposium at Rice University last April.
What do you enjoy most about attending Rice?
My favorite part of attending Rice is the amazing community of people and the genuine culture of care that the students and faculty embody every day. Even when balancing demanding coursework, research, and leadership responsibilities becomes challenging, the support system here makes all the difference. Students look out for one another in ways that feel heartfelt and help build a sense of community with no judgment or strict expectations. I love being around a community of professors and students who are welcoming, to get to know new faces and bolster this culture throughout the classes. It reminds me of the community at TMI as well. That sense of closeness and family is truly the greatest thing I could have asked for in my college experience.
Did a TMI teacher inspire your career path?
The TMI professors and classes that inspired my path into Bioengineering were Mr. Friedrich’s Biology and Biotechnology courses and Mr. Valdez’s Innovation and Design course. Mr. Friedrich first suggested I take his Biotechnology course during my time in his biology class. This, along with the Innovation and Design course taught by Mr. Valdez, opened my mind to the role of engineering in advancing the medical and biological fields. In the Innovation and Design Course, shortly after the COVID pandemic spike, I designed 3D-printed mask extenders for student dentists at UT Health San Antonio. Being able to design something that directly improved the community around me was so rewarding. I fell in love with Bioengineering then, and still do every day as I learn at university.
What is your favorite TMI memory?
One of my favorite TMI memories was giving my senior chapel talk. Giving the speech was both exciting and nerve‑racking, but what really made it special was everything and everyone around that moment. Practicing with Father Ben Nelson and Mr. Friedrich, choosing the bossa nova music to play right before I walked up, and feeling supported every step of the way made the whole process meaningful. The scriptures I chose and the personal stories I shared felt deeply connected to me, and having my family and friends there that morning made it even more emotional. The room felt as bright and colorful as the birds from Rio I talked about, and it’s a moment that will always remind me of the joyfulness of TMI.

For 132 years, TMI has stood as a place where excellence is not simply achieved, it is carried forward. Excellence isn’t a destination; it’s a relay race. The generations before you ran their lap with honor and handed you the baton. Now, as we look toward the next generation of leadership, it is your turn to pass it on.
At TMI, every student’s journey is marked by moments where they are cherished, known, and challenged. From their very first day on campus to the culminating experiences of their senior year, each student is surrounded by a community that nurtures growth, character, and purpose.
This journey does not happen by chance. TMI was built on the generosity of parents, faculty, friends, and alumni like you. Without this strong foundation, our school would be a very different and far lesser place. Alumni gifts to TMI honors the opportunities you once received as a student and helps carry them forward for future generations.
Over the years, alumni giving has had a profound impact on TMI’s continued success. There is real power in participation, and we are deeply grateful for your commitment. Your support strengthens the mission and ensures that the tradition of excellence continues for years to come.
Gifts to the TMI Fund enhance the student experience across academics, athletics, the arts, and the Corps of Cadets, ensuring that every aspect of a TMI education remains strong and vibrant.
Thank you for being part of TMI’s story, and for helping to carry forward its legacy of excellence. If you still have not made your annual gift, you can do so by clicking the button below.
